Video: How Governor Obaseki walked BEDC MD Out of Office

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has recently been embroiled in huge controversy over its quality of service to its customers. The company which serves electricity consumers in Delta, Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo States has seen protests by customers from the 4 states where it operates.

At a town hall meeting with the Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy headed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in Benin recently. An angry customer said: “What we pay for in Benin and other states is darkness. BEDC has shortchanged us. We don’t want them to operate again. Let the Federal Government revoke their licence and give it to a company that has the capacity”, with 4 other senators of the committee namely; Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Suleiman Hunkuyi, James Manager and Ahmed Ogembe present as part of their oversight duty.

Perhaps to mitigate the toxic situation with its customers especially in Edo state where the company has its headquarters, the top management of BEDC led by its Managing Director Funke Osibodu joined the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Power led by Hon. Daniel Asuquo for a visit to the the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

However, the angry governor demanded that Mrs Osibodu and her team leave the meeting saying: “As Governor of Edo State, we have lost confidence in BEDC. We don’t want them here. We are in darkness. Let us remain in darkness until we find people who are capable of delivering electricity. This is our position.”
