Nigerian winger, Victor Moses has retired from International football after…
United States President, Donald Trump has probably for the first time shown interest in a football (soccer, if you are American) issue since being elected in 2016.
In classic Trump style, he took to Twitter to deliver a totally unexpected threat against perceived saboteurs to his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) project. Apparently, this involves winning the 2o26 FIFA World Cup hosting right in a joint bid with Northern neighbour, Canada and Southern neighbour, Mexico which he has promised his supporters he will make pay for “the wall”- a border fence meant to keep illegal immigrants out of the United States.
The U.S. has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup. It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid. Why should we be supporting these countries when they don’t support us (including at the United Nations)?
The countries he is talking about may include African countries that are likely to support Morocco which is also bidding for the tournament and Middle East countries that might want to support the North African kingdom as part of Arab/Muslim solidarity.
The winning bid will be announced on 13th June 2018 at the 68th FIFA Congress and Trump is obviously making it clear that he is interested in the North American joint bid winning. How countries will react to this remains to be seen, each of the 211 members of FIFA has one vote in the congress that will decide the winner of the bid. Threatening them is a very Trump-esque way of doing things that may work or backfire- time will tell.
