Akure, Nigeria – All is set for the grand contest of the 2017 and 5th edition of the SPELL&THRILL!™ competition, which is billed to hold on 13th December, 2017.
SPELL&THRILL!™ is a spelling competition among primary and secondary school pupils and students in Southwest Nigeria and Kwara State.
It is a project of Educand Education Initiative (EEI) which seeks to increase students’ vocabulary, improve their reading habit, and build self-esteem and confidence, and stage composure. The competition also aims at improving the spelling skills, and academic concentration and focus of pupils and students in primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
For the last six (6) years, EEI has successfully executed five (5) editions of SPELL&THRILL!™. In organizing the SPELL&THRILL!™ Competition intervention project, EEI has, in partnership with corporate organizations, States’ Ministries of Education and Universal Basic Education Boards, had direct impact on two thousand, four hundred and twenty one (2421) primary and secondary schools and also, four thousand, nine hundred and fifty three (4953) students.
Currently in its fifth edition, participants in the competition are drawn from the Lagos, Ogun Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Kwara states. State preliminaries and finals had been held at designated venues in the participating states since 1st November, 2017 prior to the regional grand contest, which will hold as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 13th December, 2017
Venue: 2500 Capacity Auditorium, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria
According to the Initiator of SPELL&THRILL!™, Ayotunde Ikulamberu, this edition is endorsed by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
“This edition of SPELL&THRILL!™ is UNESCO endorsed. UNESCO is integrating the Media and Information Literacy Curriculum into school curricula all around the world. The global body has considered SPELL&THRILL!™ as a veritable platform to actually integrate that curriculum into Nigerian school’s curriculum.”
“This is our first engagement with UNESCO and it has been a good one. We are introducing it on the most basic level and we are hopeful that as the years roll by, it will be something we are going to be doing on a big scale with UNESCO.”
The SPELL&THRILL!™ competition intervention project is currently being supported by participating States’ Ministries of Education, Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) offices across Southwestern Nigeria, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, Usam Educational Consult and the African office for the Media and Information Literacy Curriculum.
