Denmark and Manchester United legendary goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel took to Twitter to celebrate his son, Kasper after an amazing performance at the World Cup. Despite the fact that Denmark lost their Round-of-16 game, 3-2 on penalties after 1-1 draw at the end of full and extra time, it was because of Kasper that the match even ended in a penalty shootout in the first place.
Both teams scored early in the first half to tie at 1-1 and at the end of 90 minutes could not be separated. Then came extra time, in the second half of the additional period, Croatia got a penalty that would have prevented penalty shootouts but Luka Modric’s tame effort in the 116th minute was saved by Kasper Schmeichel with his father jubilant in the stands.
However, it was Croatia’s goalkeeper, Subasic who saved 3 penalties out of 5 penalties from the Danes that had the final laugh with Ivan Rakitic coolly converting the final penalty to give Croatia a famous win in a match they struggled to find their best form. They face Russia next in the quarterfinals.
The defeat did not stop Peter Schmeichel from celebrating his son’s fantastic performance in the game. he tweeted:
Lost for words. Can’t be more proud of my country, my son, his teammates, all the staff and our fantastic national coach Åge Hareide. When all the tears have dried out we will realise how well we did
