Mark Babatunde: The Nigerian Teaching Chinese to Russians in the Freezing Cold of Yakutia

Nigerians are well-known travellers but it is fair to say that because our country is in the tropical region of the world, living in places with extreme cold is not very attractive to most Nigerians.

However, Mark Babatunde is an exception, ‘the Northernmost African’ as he likes to call himself originally went to study Chinese in China. Along the line in China, he met a Russian girl, Natalia from Yakutia and decided to follow her to her home region in Russia (the things that men do for love eh). Despite the brutal cold with average winter temperatures at -35 °C, Mark decided to stay. The cold was shocking to him but we have to guess his love for Natalia was stronger than any freezing cold. The winter in Yakutia lasts for 7 months, apart from a short summer lasting about 2-3 months, the weather is usually very cold.
