Federal Government Declares June 12 Democracy Day, Scraps May 29

The Federal Government of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari has declared June 12,  Democracy Day in Nigeria.

He has also granted the honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) and Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) to the presumed winner of the June 12 1993 election, Chief MKO Abiola and his running mate, Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe respectively.

Meanwhile, late human rights activist and icon Chief Gani Fawehinmi also gets honoured as GCON.

What happens to May 29 as Democracy Day? It has been scrapped as Democracy Day.
