Lagos Groans Under Increasing Uncleared Garbage

Lagos prides itself as being the ‚ÄúCentre of Excellence‚ÄĚ and it can be said to be setting the standards in many regards for Nigeria.

However, there is an ugly trend that has emerged in the last year and is yet to be properly tackled by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led government. This is the amount to filth in the state, there is refuse almost at every turn and corner and the bad habits of dumping refuse indiscriminately has returned. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) seems to have lost its efficiency but this might not be the fault of this institution.

Governor Ambode seems intent on changing the waste management system in Lagos and is bringing a company, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions on board to replace the Private Sector Participants (PSPs) that were largely in charge of clearing waste during the the administration of Babatunde, Raji Fashola. The Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) is meant to improve waste management in Lagos with Visionscape reported to have invested $50 million in equipment procurement and recently got delivered a consignment of brand new 100 waste management vehicles equipped with the latest technology. However, a tour of the city shows a different story, almost all the major roads and junctions in parts of the state have uncleared garbage as the following pictures show:

The faster these Visionscape trucks get to work to start cleaning Lagos effectively the better for all of us before we experience and outbreak of epidemic. The government needs to expedite action on whatever improvements it wants to make to Lagos state’s waste management system.
