What is looking likely to be the mother of all strike actions at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is at the verge of being recorded as Resident Doctors of the hospital are set for a show down with the hospital management as their ultimatum lapses this week,
According to several sources the doctors are set for a total shut down of the hosital so the frequent loss of lives and other atrocities being done to patients at the hospital will not continue going on.
Some of the doctors were seen over the long holiday in groups discussing the demands and the ultimatum. They particularly noted that management is yet to meet the demands which bother on patient care and staff welfare as the CT scan machine , radiotherapy and other machines are still on functioning and consumables are still not available for patient care, he burst into laughter when asked about staff welfare saying “UBTH staff wey them no dey owe salary or arrears that one na UBTH staff?”
A staff from management who pleaded annonymity on account of his job told newsmen that these resident doctors have been patient but the management is not just interested, he continued that all through last week they had to be explaining to patients who stormed upstairs in large numbers to demand that the management fixes the problems in the hospital, he went on that truly no problem has been fixed but we have to do our work.
It appears that the four working days of this week will be very interesting here in UBTH as the nurses who had the hospital management slam them a court order restraining them from going on strike, protesting or having rallies are gearing up for the hospital management. The consultants of the hospital also have an ultimatum which lapses this week.
A lot is expected from the hospital management this period as interview with the ARD president revealed he said ” we are have done our part , we have tabled the issues before our hospital management, the quality of care we provide has to improve, staff welfare has to improve. Our demands are not out of reach they are achievable in this hospital and we insist on them so the hospital can be better for us all. It is left for management to do her part.
