Buhari Calls for Constitutional Resolution of Zimbabwe Impasse
President Muhammadu Buhari has called for a constitutional resolution of the ongoing political impasse in Zimbabwe. The military has taken control of the country and wants President Robert Mugabe to resign but he has refused to do so.
In a statement released by the president’s special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina: “The President urged all political and military stakeholders in Zimbabwe to avoid any action that may plunge the country into unnecessary conflict and impact negatively on the region.”
According to President Buhari, “every attempt must be made to resolve all contentious issues by constitutional means in Zimbabwe to save the country from avoidable political instability.”
The African Union (AU) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) have expressed their disapproval of any unconstitutional change of power in Zimbabwe.
