Analysis of UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Matches

By Abdulkabir Olatunji

The UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw has been made. Let me share my thoughts on the fixtures.

14 February & 8 March

Benfica (POR) v Borussia Dortmund (GER)

This looks like a fixture with a lot of goals in it. However,  Dortmund should be too strong for Benfica over 2 legs.

Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) v Barcelona (ESP)

PSG must be wondering how they can defeat Barcelona this time around having falling short in recent seasons. Looking at the current form of both teams,  it is obvious they are both not at their best. However,  I expect Barcelona to go through over the 2 legs.

15 February & 7 March

Real Madrid (ESP, holders) v Napoli (ITA)

Real Madrid are current champions and while Napoli is a good team,  I don’t expect them to go through. Real should go through after a good fight from the team from Naples.

Bayern München (GER) v Arsenal (ENG)

Bayern have had the better of Arsenal in recent years and I expect this trend to continue unless Arsenal can stun the Bavarians with some stunning attacking football both home and away. I still select Bayern to go through though.

21 February & 15 March

Manchester City (ENG) v Monaco (FRA)

Monaco will fancy their chances against Manchester City and this could be a very entertaining fixture considering the quality that Manchester City have. I expect City to prevail in the end because of the experience of Pep Guardiola.

Bayer Leverkusen (GER) v Atlético Madrid (ESP)

Atlético Madrid have great strength and experience to be able to overcome a very hardworking Leverkusen side. Diego Someone’s team have proven they can navigate their way to the last stages of the Champione League.

22 February & 14 March

Porto (POR) v Juventus (ITA)

This looks like another entertaining fixture with two sides well set-up. Juventus should have more experience to move forward.

Sevilla (ESP) v Leicester City (ENG)

Leicester City are on a great run in the competition. However,  Sevilla are a very strong team and will fancy their chances against City. I fancy their chances too having dispatched Liverpool to win their 3rd successive Europa Cup last season.
