AFCON 2017: The Contenders, The Pretenders

AFCON 2017: The Contenders, The Pretenders

Jarus

AFCON 2017 finally starts today. It is no news that Nigeria did not qualify; it will therefore not be a popular event among Nigerians. Nonetheless, some of fans of African football will still follow.

Here is my classification of participating countries by chances.

FAVOURITE
Ghana

STRONG CONTENDERS
Algeria
Ivory Coast
Egypt

LOW-CHANCE CONTENDERS

Mali
Senegal
Tunisia
Morocco

PRETENDERS
Gabon
Cameroun
Burkina Faso

POSSIBLE UPSET
DR Congo

NO-HOPERS
Togo
Zimbabwe
Uganda
Guinea Bissau

That’s my grading as a long time follower of African football.

Now, who do I want to win? Mali. They have been close too many times, entering semis in many editions. But I don’t see them winning. They don’t have fighting spirit. Ghana have also been close probably more times, but I don’t have sympathy for Ghana as far as football is concerned.

Who do I think will win? Ghana. They have quality players with commitment to their country and good fighting spirit.

Yet, no analyst that knows the slightest thing about football will rule out Egypt and Cameroun. Those two countries are lions when it comes to AFCON.

All said, I will be rooting for Mali (same way I rooted for CIV before they eventually won in 2015), but I don’t see them winning.

Guys, enjoy the game.
